Increased market transparency across all parts of the agri-food chain is an objective at EU level. As noted by the European Commission, “a lack of market transparency and information asymmetries can lead to inefficient markets and give those with access to the most accurate data disproportionate power”. Thus, the EU collates and publishes pricing and other market information for many agricultural commodities.
Although there is extensive information available on both producer and consumer prices in respect of agri-food products, there is less information publicly available on prices at the intermediary stages of the supply chain.
